FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q:  Do you still see patients?

A:  Although I have retired from private practice and am no longer a primary care physician, I am available for consultations, either in person or on the phone.

Patients can call the office at 310-457-5806 to schedule an appointment on a Tuesday or Thursday. The typical consultation lasts one hour at the rate of $350/hour.

Q:  What would you recommend as an alternative to prescription HRT?

A:  I have had wonderful success with natural progesterone (not progestin) cream and feel comfortable recommending the natural progesterone cream. As with anything, progesterone is not the answer to everything for every woman. A common safe dose before menopause is 15-30 mg. of cream one or two times daily for the 1-2 weeks before menses. After menopause, the dose is 15-30 mg. 1 or 2 times daily for 26 to 28 days per month.

For millennia, women have used herbs wisely and safely. There are many herbs available for symptoms of menopause and pre-menopause. I would prefer women not wait until menopause to start learning and using these herbs.
Two good natural preparations are PMS Support, AM/PM Menopause Formula. (See Resources)

Q:  What can I do about PMS?

A:  Although over the counter progesterone creams that contain 15-20 mg./dose are often a quick and easy fix, a diet high in sugar and lacking in nutrients is often the cause and needs to be addressed. So I often recommend starting with a good multi-vitamin such as Nutrizyme with iron or Nutrizyme without iron
(See Resources) and diminishing sugar and other refined foods and chemicals from your diet. Start with a health breakfast including some healthy lean protein. I often recommend herbs for a few months such as PMS Support or AM/PM Menopause Formula, 1-2 tablets one or two times a day for two weeks prior to menses.

These years are a time of increased sensitivity and intuition, and I highly recommend you start to journal and listen to your SELF.

Q:  What are the first steps to take when you’re on the way to burnout?

A:
Eat protein at every meal.  Eat breakfast, eat real food. Eat small meals and snacks often during the day. This should make your cravings disappear. Always take a multi-vitamin-mineral supplement e.g. Nutrizyme with iron or Nutrizyme without iron (See Resources), at the very least.

Breathe! Stoke your inner fire with deep breaths throughout the day to calm your central nervous system. Five (5) every hour is a great start.  (You can read more in Chapter 10 in
Tired of Being Tired). Get enough sleep. Sleep time is your body’s repair time. You can learn more by reading  Chapter7 in  Tired of Being Tired.)

Q:  What effect do toxins have in my life?

A:
Unfortunately, we are swimming in a sea of toxins. Although we can’t change all of this, we can change some. Avoid fluoride (such as in toothpaste), get your mercury fillings removed. Don’t use aspartame (it’s a known neurotoxin that no one needs), and don’t microwave in plastic as it becomes carcinogenic and hormone disruptive..

Q:  Can I do anything about ADD?

A:  ADD is essentially the “brain on fire.” Both children and adults respond well to basic dietary changes and can fare well without drugs if sugar (usually the main culprits) and white flour are removed from the diet and replaced by real food at breakfast, as well as high protein consumption throughout the day. EFA's and B vitamins can accelerate balance and healing.

Q:  What role do essential fatty acids play in the body?

A:  Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are vitally important as “neuromins,” or brain food. Without good essential fatty acids, a person can become violent, easily distracted and unable to concentrate. Lack of fats can lead to hormone imbalance, as well as dry skin, hair and nails. Good fats also replace cravings for other bad fats. EFAs can be found in fish, sea vegetables  and other green vegetables.

Q:  Is soy safe to eat?

A:
Soy is generally recognized as safe. It is widely believed that Asians live longer and have fewer cancers because of the large amount of soy eaten. In truth, the amount of soy is very small, about two teaspoons daily. Most foods are safe when eaten in moderation = 1 – 2 oz per day of soy protein.

Fermented soy foods are easier to digest and healthier than unfermented. A typical day’s amount of soy should not exceed 4 ounces.

Q:  I am approaching menopause and am really scared. Do you have any advice for me?

A:  Begin to imagine how much better you would feel if you knew that menopause was the moment you had looked forward to all of your life?

Since I trust that by now you know that your Body & Mind are connected, if you dread something that can make it worse than it could be. And what our culture has taught us is that menopause is a time of fear. (For more information, you can order Dr. Hanley’s CD “PMS through Menopause” by sending an E-mail to Jesse Hanley M.D.

Fortunately, to the contrary, for millennia women have looked forward to menopause as the most respected and powerful time of their lives. If you have not already started phytohormone rich herbs, please start now.  Three recommended products are PMS Support, AM/PM  Menopause Formula and Menobalance. (See Resources.)
